Altered art is not a new art form. Artists have been transforming everyday objects into works of art for a long time. Altered art is the result of taking a found object and changing it in some intriguing way. It’s an idea as old as art itself. It has become a very hot trend in the past few years, especially amongst crafters. However artists have been altering things for years.

In the middle ages monks in the monasteries would copy new text over older parchment manuscripts. Parchment was so precious that it was recycled rather than thrown away.

Then as time progressed it was common practice for artists to paint over earlier less important paintings. During the modern art movement, Picasso, Georges Braque, Kurt Schwitters, Marcel Duchamp and Robert Rauschenberg all used found objects in their works. They managed to create breathtaking works of art from ordinary objects such as a bicycle wheel, bottle rack, tires, stuffed animals, and lamps just to name a few.

In the mid 1900’s the artist Joseph Cornell created exquisite box constructions. He used objects such as natural, found, old papers, and photographic reproductions. He was a master at juxtaposition and fine detail.

Creating a piece of altered art isn’t rally all that difficult. Altered art is created using three primary elements; imagery, text and object. Images communicate to the viewer what we are trying to express in the art work. Artists have been adding text to their works since the invention of the written language. Text may be added to identify the chosen image or to convey additional meaning. The objects that can be used are unlimited. It could be a spoon, hairbrush, a box or an old book. Some artists focus primarily on altering books.

Turn old books or vintage containers into delightful and exciting new creations. If you look around your house you will see numerous items that you have kept or collected and these can be the beginning of an altered art project. You can transform them into a wonderful expression of your own artistic vision.

My name is Annette Labedzki. I am a Canadian abstract painter. I have been a full time artist for the last 25 years.

I was born in St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, B.C. A few years later we moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I spent my childhood and early adulthood.

I remember the first award I received was in Art class in grade 10. The superintendent of the Winnipeg School Board bought one of my paintings! I was so excited!

I received my BFA at Emily Carr College of Art and Design and spent another year studying philosophy at The University of British Columbia. During this time my husband learned English, drove a taxi, received his BMLS degree (Bachelor of Medical Lab. Sciences) and received his DMD degree (dentist).

Another award I received was First Prize at the Pacific Northwest Annual Show at the University of Oregon, U.S.A. It is in their private collection.

Music schools are now becoming more diverse by expanding their course offerings and majors to include music business, musical genres and especially music production and technology.   Among these music schools, one of the hottest trends in music education is in contemporary music and modern music production.

Why?  Music schools are looking for new ways to open their resources to a wider range of students.  Especially in the aforementioned area.  Technology is changing the way many of today’s leading musicians compose, perform and produce.  It is also changing the way in which music reaches audiences both in the recorded and performance mediums.

The country’s leading music programs and even traditional conservatories are taking notice.  There is a reason for this.  Schools are finding it necessary for their sustainability to train students for the careers that will exist 20 years from now.  This includes going beyond the traditional classical curriculum and picking up on ideas that have led to the emergence of non-traditional music programs such as Berklee College of Music and Musicians Institute.  Many of today’s jobs a few years from now will have been replaced by other things.  Other careers in music will be invented or explored.  What these jobs or other careers will be, only time will tell.  But colleges owe it to their students to make sure their needs are being met and that they are truly prepared for a career in music.

Traditional distinctions among types of music schools are becoming less prominent as schools increase their offerings by adding more academic and technology programs.  For instance, Chicago’s Columbia College just recently launched the Contemporary Urban and Popular Music Program and awards a Bachelor of Music degree for students that are interested in producing, composing and performing modern music.  Ironically, this is the same degree awarded to students for classical composition.

Many schools which started as traditional conservatories are now offering degrees in Music Business, Music Industry and Music Engineering Technology.  Berklee College of Music and the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music were the among the pioneers in these non-traditional fields of music.  Schools are offering these programs designed for modern music production which are essential for sustainability and are using modern methods in order to reach current and future students.

Music has been deeply affected by the enormous change evolving in all forms of media.  Every branch of the arts has and will be affected for years to come.  It’s important that we embrace the future and what technology has to offer in the field of music.  With new ideas come new possibilities and exciting opportunities.  This emerging trend has not gone unnoticed and many music schools are now getting involved.  Music colleges owe it to their students to meet their current goals as a musician and lead them in directions they may never thought existed.

We are living in the age of the metrosexual male. A metrosexual male is one who strives to be the most perfectly manicured, coifed, toned, tanned, plucked, waxed and well-dressed human of the masculine gender who is absolutely and unequivocally not gay or guilty of any homosexual tendencies whatsoever.

There is so much gender blending going on these days that I am inclined to finally take a stand and publicly declare myself a “femasexual.” A femasexual is a millennium woman who has survived Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, and gay marriage licensing, only to find herself in competition with just about the only class of men left who can date and mate: the metrosexual.

As an outed femasexual, I am ready to step on some pedicure-perfect, metrosexual tootsies. Before I do, let me state that I like men who take care of themselves. But between men and women there are some lines that shouldn’t be crossed — and dudes getting their brows waxed, shaped and arched is one of them. A manicure with colored polish is another.

It’s an insult to a femasexual when a metrosexual has skin that is smoother, more toned and more polished than her own. Also, any hint of enhanced coloring on the cheeks, lips and eyes of a metrosexual is enough to drive a femasexual into a complete frenzy.

Metrosexuals are crowding us femasexuals out of our beauty spas and salons. We not only have to vie for top-level positions in the workplace — for which we are still underpaid compared to our counterparts — we now have to vie for hair, skin and nail appointments.

And, adding insult to injury, metrosexuals are known to be better tippers than femasexuals.

Metrosexuals love to shop for the latest designer shoes, clothes and carryalls to complement their hair, face, bodies and their hottie car. They also like to dabble in gourmet cooking and wine-tasting. What could be more adorable than a porcelain-skinned and pouty-collagen-enhanced metrosexual in a designer apron stirring a pot of bouillabaisse in the kitchen?

On the flip side, in television ads you don’t see a metrosexual raising his perfectly manicured hands (and brows) in delight over the wonders of the latest toilet bowl scrubber. And a metrosexual wouldn’t be caught dead at a Super Wal-Mart with a shopping cart full of cleaning supplies, paper towels or Pampers.

The femasexual, on the other hand, does all of the above and then some. Gamely, she manages to fit her salon appointments in between the mundane activities of everyday life. So when a femasexual seeking a mate discovers that his cosmetic priorities outweigh her own, there is bound to be some friction. She may find the metrosexual’s total self-absorption a turnoff. And what is the point of the countless nicks on her shins, when she goes to rub her freshly shaved, silky smooth leg across the equally shaved and silky smooth leg of her bedfellow?

There really is no future, I fear, for the femasexual. Not only is she being overshadowed by the metrosexual male, she is being put out to pasture by gay men who can hire sperm donors, get married and get benefits. Skip the cramps, the tampons and other female products; we may as well have our uteruses cut out and flash-frozen for future generations.
